Tip Calculator — Calculate Restaurant Tips and Split the Bill

Free tip calculator. Quickly calculate restaurant tip, total bill, and split the cost between any number of people. Standard tip percentages built in.

A tip calculator takes the math out of restaurant bills, especially when you are dining with a group or trying to leave the right percentage on a tricky total. It calculates the tip amount, adds it to your bill, and can split the total fairly between any number of people.

Our tip calculator handles the standard percentages (15%, 18%, 20%, and 25%) along with custom percentages for any situation. It is fast, accurate, and works on your phone right at the table.

Standard tipping in the United States

In the US, tipping is part of how restaurant servers earn their living — many earn most of their income from tips rather than wages. Standard tip ranges are: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, 20% for great service, and 22-25% for exceptional service or large parties.

Tip on the pre-tax amount technically, though many people just tip on the total for simplicity. For groups of 6 or more, restaurants often add an automatic gratuity (usually 18%) to the bill, so check before adding more.

Other situations: bar drinks $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of tab, coffee shops 10-15%, food delivery 15-20% (more in bad weather), takeout 0-10%, hairstylists 15-20%, taxis/rideshares 15-20% of fare.

    Tipping etiquette around the world

Tipping practices vary dramatically. In Japan, tipping is generally not expected and can even be considered rude. In Europe, service is often included in the bill — leaving an extra 5-10% is appreciated for good service but not required like in the US.

Australia and New Zealand have minimal tipping culture. Canada follows US conventions (15-20%). South America generally expects 10%. Always check local customs before dining abroad to avoid over- or under-tipping.

    How to use this calculator

    1. Enter the bill amount.
    2. Choose a standard tip percentage or enter a custom amount.
    3. Optionally enter the number of people splitting the bill.
    4. See the tip amount, total bill, and per-person amount.

Worked example: $87.50 bill, 20% tip, split 4 ways

    Tip amount: $87.50 × 0.20 = $17.50.

    Total bill: $87.50 + $17.50 = $105.00.

    Per person: $105.00 ÷ 4 = $26.25 each.

    Frequently asked questions

    Should I tip on tax?

Technically tip is on pre-tax amount, but most people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. The difference is usually only a dollar or two.

    Do I tip on takeout?

Tipping on takeout is appreciated but optional. 10% is a common amount, especially for larger orders or attentive packing.

    What if service was bad?

Even for poor service, leaving 10-15% is recommended in the US since tips are part of the server's wages. For truly bad service, speak to a manager rather than leaving no tip.
